Leisure, Arts and Culture

Coate waterLeisure, arts and culture support the wellbeing of both individuals and the whole community. They provide individuals and communities with the opportunity to express themselves, to build social networks and to be active within their local environment. Leisure and cultural facilities such as sports centres, libraries, arts venues and museums are meeting places that support mental and physical stimulation as well as places where individuals and groups take part in activities that have positive social and physical outcomes.

The leisure and cultural sector provides a range of opportunities for people to take positive steps within their lives, whether that be through volunteering or taking part. The leisure and cultural sector is an important provider of positive activities for marginalised and excluded groups as well as a platform for community integration. The creative sector provides a rich diversity to the employment base of the county and delivers a valuable contribution to the borough’s Gross Value Added (GVA).

Data relating to leisure, arts and culture are drawn from a wide spectrum of sources. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMD) publishes statistics on a wide variety of topics including from its Taking Part survey. Sport England publishes data at local, regional and national level, including statistics on participation and volunteering from its Active Lives survey.
